Question: I paid cash for a car, but the Valley dealer still wanted my Social Security number. He said it was to obtain my credit report as required by federal law. Is this true? - Al Von Freeden Scottsdale

Answer: The Valley Automobile Dealers Association says car dealers are required to fill out certain documents even if a customer pays cash. Anytime a dealer accepts $10,000 or more in cash, a Form 8300 is required. It's a joint form of the IRS and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. It's used by the federal government to track people attempting to evade taxes or profit from criminal activity. The form helps clear legitimate cash buyers. It requires a taxpayer ID number, which for individuals is their Social Security number. So you do have to provide your Social Security number, but there is no law requiring dealers to run a credit check on a cash buyer.
