Glendale cops murder bicycle rider after he rode through an intersection without "due regard" for motorists. I suspect that is cop talk for a bicyclist who runs a stop sign. Something which I have done 1,000s of times.
Glendale police: Armed man who fought officer shot, killed by Lisa Halverstadt and Shala Marks - May. 10, 2011 01:55 PM The Arizona Republic A Glendale police officer shot and killed an unidentified bicyclist after he reportedly pulled out a gun during a physical fight with a second officer in downtown Glendale, police said. The second Glendale officer sustained an injury to his upper body during the fight, said Sgt. Brent Coombs, a Glendale police spokesman. He was not shot. Police said the injured officer was "shaken up" but in good condition. Glendale police described what happened about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday: Two uniformed Glendale officers who were on foot ran after a bicyclist after they saw him drive through the intersection of 53rd Avenue and Glenn Drive without "due regard" for motorists, Coombs said. One of the officers caught up to the bicyclist and, while trying to stop him, got into a fight with him. As the officer used a tactical move to try to distance himself from the man, the bicyclist pulled out a handgun, Coombs said. Then, police said, the officer's partner fired at the bicyclist, killing him. Multiple shots were fired. The police spokesman did not know how many gunshot wounds the bicyclist sustained and said detectives had yet to identify him. Coombs said could not immediately provide further information about the officers but said they were members of the department's Neighborhood Response Unit, a proactive squad that cracks down on crime in Glendale neighborhoods. As is routine in police shootings, the two officers will be placed on paid administrative leave while police investigate the shooting. |
