I saw this cool human powered wood lathe
at Bass Pro Shop in Mesa, Arizona.
They were using it in a display to sell hunting clothing, but still the lathe is an interesting device from the old days when they didn't have electricity or gas motors to run everything. At the bottom of both photos is a wood slat that you push on with your feet. The wooden slat turns the fly wheel which in turn drives the wood lathe with the belt. I played with it a while and that fly wheel is very heavy and I suspect once it gets going it will spin what every wood you need to spin fast enough to cut it with the lathes cutting tools. |
