More intersections in Phoenix may get red-light cameras
Phoenix considers adding to its total of 12 locations

Phoenix is considering whether to add red-light cameras at several intersections where accidents have been a problem.
The city has the cameras at 12 locations. Only one of those intersections - 15th and Missouri avenues - is among the top five for accidents. Another intersection with cameras, 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road, ranks in the top 10.
The decision to add more cameras came about with updated information and recommendations from the task force studying the reverse lanes on Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue, said Kerry Wilcoxon of the Street Transportation Department.
Wilcoxon said installing the cameras would not cost the city any money - the city's contract calls for installation costs to be provided by the camera provider, Redflex. The company is paid on the basis of citations that result in court fines.
Lt. Patrick Hofmann, photo-enforcement manager for the Phoenix Police Department, said several factors go into locating the cameras: speed, number and seriousness of accidents, and fatalities.
"In a perfect world, all the intersections would be monitored," he said. "We're currently evaluating more sites."
He said he would like to see cameras at all signaled intersections on Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue.
Hofmann said the point of the cameras is to save lives.
"It's about traffic safety and changing behavior," he said.
Worst Phoenix intersections for red-light crashes
Phoenix's Street Transportation Department has listed the 21 intersections that, from 2008 to 2010, had the most crashes that involved running red lights.
The ones that have red-light cameras are marked with an asterisk, and the ones being considered for cameras are marked with a plus sign.
Additional intersections with red-light cameras are Seventh Street and Union Hills Drive, 35th and Dunlap avenues, 12th Street and Camelback Road, 67th Avenue and McDowell Road, 40th Street and Pecos Road, Cave Creek and Bell roads, and 16th and Jefferson streets.
