For those of you who don't speak Spanish "Vamos Jose" means "We are going Jose", and of course "Ch*ng* Joe" is something that can't be printed on a family web site like this. They might have meant to use "Vamanos Jose" which means "Let's go Jose". Inmates are forced to wear the pink undergarb. But tens of thousands of people outside jail have purchased pairs, including including Sarah Palin and Hugh Hefner, for $15 apiece, the sheriff said in a press release. The Spanish version goes on sale after Arpaio introduces them at 11 a.m. Monday at the Valley Luna restaurant, 3336 W. Bell Road, Phoenix. "It will raise more money to help at-risk youth and it is a poke in the eye to the critics who for years have called me racist because of my tough stance on illegal immigration," Arpaio said. "I'm not a racist and have never been. I simply believe people who come to this country should do so legally." The press release says Arpaio is trying to boost sales and have a little fun. The boxers, he said, will "raise eyebrows as well as sales." Latina activist Lydia Guzman of Somos America and Respect Repeto called it "just another publicity stunt." The new shorts and the Mexican restaurant location do not prove the sheriff isn't racist, Guzman said. "Who is he trying to convince?" she asked. "He is trying to too hard to convince us." |
